Every new hotel restaurant will tell the same story: We don’t just want to be for the guests. But particularly in a restaurant town like New York, there’s a challenge to creating a spot that can not only attract locals, but compete with the many dining options in a mile radius.

Jake Epstein believes he has the formula to make his new restaurant on the ground level of Ian Schrager’s Lower East Side PUBLIC Hotel into destination dining. He’s calling Buddy & Son a “New York brasserie” (au courant with the many new French-leaning spots that have opened in Lower Manhattan) and will oversee the culinary program for the restaurant and lobby cafe (the upstairs bar is separately operated). Both are set to debut later this fall.
