Like all good gambles, the idea for a New York version of Guinness was hatched on Staten Island. Jay Sykes and Matt McGinley (who worked for Diageo, Guinness's corporate owner, as an area sales manager in New York) run Flagship Brewing Company and wondered why bars emphasizing local craft beer still include something made abroad en masse. So, three years ago, they debuted Wolf Hound, a craft beer brand that includes their Nitro Irish Stout. They sell to a nascent group of 60 or so bars and restaurants around the city, including Old Town Bar, Swift Hibernian Lounge, and Fraunces Tavern (“Good afternoon Muttonistas,” Jason Hackett, a Guinness taste testing influencer, said on a recent visit while donning his signature pork pie hat. “Wolf Hound Stout is a bit coffee heavy as some independent stouts tend to be, but I really liked it, and it was certainly a Creamer!”). No word on what the Fraunces Tavern ghost thinks.
